What Is Pilates?
Pilates is a program of conditioning exercises that combine stretching, strengthening, and breathing. A Pilates program can help you achieve gains in flexibility, strength, balance, and posture. Instead of performing more reps, Pilates focuses on performing fewer, more precise movements that require concentration, control, and proper form. Pilates does not use weights. Rather, it emphasizes body weight and motion control as resistance. As a result of these controlled motions the patient is able to achieve greater full body strength, mental focus, body awareness, flexibility, muscle tone, and energy.

Building A Stronger Core
Pilates emphasizes movements requiring the use of core muscles- the deep abdominal muscles, buttock muscles, and muscles closest to the spine. Pilates' focus on building core muscles and postural awareness are especially well indicated for the alleviation and prevention of back pain, shoulder pain and hip pain as well as numerous other diseases and conditions. By integrating the trunk, pelvis, and shoulder girdle Pilates enables you to develop a strong core!

Pilates-based rehab can benefit injuries and disorders such as, but not limited to:
• Chronic Neck & Back Pain
• Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
• Performance & Sports Injuries
• Repetitive Stress Injuries
• Muscle Strains
• Acute & Chronic Tendonitis/Bursitis
• Shoulder & Arm Pain
• Hip and Knee Pain
• Foot and Ankle Pain

How can Pilates help me with my physical problem?

Pilates using the Reformer, Cadillac, Split Pedal Chair and mat exercises has become a popular form of rehabilitation used by physical therapists and chiropractors because of the great success it has in relieving injuries and developing functional full body strength. The benefits of Pilates-based rehab by a licensed physical therapist or Doctor of Chiropractic are remarkable. Pilates has been shown to be extremely successful in soft tissue injury rehab. Pilates is an excellent method of re-educating muscle patterns and functional movements that will benefit every day life.

Recently, Pilates has merged with other movement techniques, such as yoga, or use of a Swiss Ball. This promotes creative integration of the Pilates principles into a greater range of exercises that can successfully return the injured person back to normal life. The range of Pilates exercises available enables us to create a personalized program for individuals of all ages. We, at OrthoSport Health Center, provide excellent care and are able to create a personalized rehabilitation program to fit your needs.
